Charley: Firstly, thank you very much for wanting to talk to me. I think the music is amazing, so I hope you’re looking forward to the interview!

Susanna: I am very much looking forward to it! I think it’s really cool. I’m honoured that someone from Belgium found me! Great!

Charley: Ok, perfect! Could you introduce yourself to the people who may not know you yet?

Susanna: I am Susanna Kay. I’m twenty-five, I live in Amsterdam and I was born there. I call myself a glam pop singer, because my music is glamorous pop. But also because of my love for fashion and what style of fashion I love. My debut single ‘Off The Hook’ has just been released on May seventh. It was recorded in Denmark and Sweden…

Charley: You’ve worked with DEEKAY on the single, what was that like?

Susanna: Yes, that was so cool. Do you know them?

Charley: Yes, they’ve made a lot of very good music!

Susanna: They’re really amazing. For me it was one of the first time being in a studio and travelling abroad, all the way to Denmark… It was great, with vocal coaching and diction as well… Word for word till it was recorded perfectly. Pure class.

Charley: Could you tell some more about the end result, ‘Off The Hook’?

Susanna: ‘Off The Hook’ was also a collaboration with Svante Halldin, the original writer. He’s from Stockholm and co-produced the song. I got the track from my A&R manager who has contacts all over the world. He himself is a successful songwriter and producer as well.

Charley: That would be Tony Cornelissen then?

Susanna: Yes, that’s right! He’s written for Cascada and the Dutch band Di-Rect. I don’t know if you know them?

Charley: Yes, from songs like ‘Cool Without You’.

Susanna: I’m so happy with him as my A&R manager, we get on so well. So he brought me the song and I immediately loved it. The session singer on the demo had a completely different voice than me though. I was happy that when I was going to sing it, it was going to be something totally mine. The production changed quite a bit from the demo I heard as well, but there’s just something recognisable in the song, something that makes it a hit.

Charley: Absolutely. The Spanish singer Edurne has recorded her own version of the song. Have you heard it?

Susanna: That did come to my attention, it was new to me. Her version is very different. It’s much more electronic. On my song you can clearly hear my voice, with her there’s some sort of effect over it that kind of hides her voice.

Charley: I personally prefer your version!

Susanna: Thank you! I was first too… *laughs*

Charley: Your version might even be a bit more rock sounding?

Susanna I call it pop myself, but maybe there’s that rock feeling because of the electric guitars in it. I’ve heard before that it sounds a little like P!nk or Katy Perry… But in the end they’re not rock singers either. They’ve just got that little something in their voice or production that makes it a bit rock. Maybe you can hear that with me as well.

Charley: On YouTube there’s some videos where you’re singing Norah Jones and Duffy…

Susanna: Yes, that’s right!

Charley: Are you into different styles then, personally?

Susanna: Those videos are kind of old though. Everyone goes through an evolution and has to discover themselves. What’s right for me? What should I do? That was also when I just wanted to perform as much as possible. I tried so many different styles back then. In other videos you can see me singing Stevie Wonder and Katy Perry… I’ve done a little bit of everything. So yes, I love Norah Jones, but right now I want to focus on pop. That’s where I’m at right now. Also because I want to put a lot of dancing into my live shows. But you never know in the future! *laughs*

Charley: You’re working with some famous dancers for your performances…

Susanna: Indeed! The Netherlands and Belgium do So You Think You Can Dance together, you guys watch that as well. One of the dancers is Remy, he was one of the finalists, the other one is Marcello, I think he got to the stage just before that. It’s obviously amazing to work with such great dancers. I’ve always danced myself as well…

Charley: So they could ask you to do Dancing With The Stars?

Susanna: *laughs* Well, who knows! That seems like fun, yes!

Charley: The recording of your video wasn’t the first time you were in front of a camera. I saw that you were in some commercials as well?

Susanna: That’s right, I’ve done some acting!

Charley: Is that something you want to combine or do you solely want to focus on music now?

Susanna: Never say never. I doubted for so long, “Will it be acting or will it be singing?” To make that choice I went to New York at the Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute. That was three months of intense singing and acting. Eventually, I chose singing, but that doesn’t mean I don’t like to act. I just thought that if I want to be successful at something I have to focus on one thing. Then everything else will follow. So if someone were to ask “Do you want to be in a movie?” or “Do you want to do a commercial?”, then yes, obviously I’d do that, but for now my focus is on singing.

Charley: Eerst en vooral, bedankt dat je met mij wou praten! Ik vind de muziek fantastisch, dus ik hoop dat je zin hebt in het interview!

Susanna: Ik heb héél veel zin in het interview! Ik vind het helemaal cool. Ik voel me vereerd dat iemand uit België me heeft gevonden. Hartstikke leuk.

Charley: Ok, ideaal! Kan je jezelf even voorstellen voor de mensen die je misschien nog niet kennen?

Susanna: Ik ben Susanna Kay. Ik ben vijfentwintig, ik woon in Amsterdam en ik ben ook geboren in Amsterdam. Ik noem mezelf een glam pop singer, omdat mijn muziek glamorous pop is. Maar het heeft ook te maken met mijn liefde voor mode en van welke stijl mode ik hou. Ik hou van glamorous en ik wil dan ook graag altijd gestyled uitzien op het podium. Mijn debuutsingle ‘Off The Hook’ is net gereleased op zeven mei. Het nummer is opgenomen in Denemarken en  Zweden…

Charley: Voor de single heb je samengewerkt met DEEKAY, hoe was dat?

Susanna: Ja, dat was echt super cool. Jij kent ze?

Charley: Ja, die hebben al heel veel heel goede muziek gemaakt!

Susanna: Ze zijn echt fantastisch. Het was voor mij ook een van de eerste keren in de studio en op reis, helemaal naar Denemarken… Echt super gaaf, ook met vocal coaching en uitspraak… Echt woordje voor woordje net zo lang doorgaan tot het perfect op de plaat staat. Echt klasse.

Charley: Kan je wat meer vertellen over het uiteindelijke resultaat, ‘Off The Hook’?

Susanna: ‘Off The Hook’ was ook een samenwerking met Svante Halldin, de originele schrijver. Hij komt uit Stockholm en heeft mee geproduceerd. Ik kreeg het nummer van mijn A&R manager die contacten heeft over de hele wereld. Hij is zelf naast A&R manager nog een succesvol songwriter en producer.

Charley: Dat is dan Tony Cornelissen waarschijnlijk?

Susanna: Ja, dat klopt! Hij heeft ook voor Cascada heel veel nummers geschreven en voor de in Nederland bekende band Di-Rect. Ik weet niet of jij die kent?

Charley: Ja, van nummers als ‘Cool Without You’.

Susanna: Ik ben heel erg blij dat hij mijn A&R manager is, we komen ook erg goed overeen. Hij kwam dus met het nummer en ik vond het meteen een super leuk. Ook omdat de demozangeres die het toen had ingezongen een hele andere stem had dan ik. Ik was blij dat als ik het dan ging zingen, dat het dan helemaal van mezelf zou worden. Ook de productie is uiteindelijk best wel veranderd tegenover de demo die ik toen hoorde, maar er zit iets herkenbaars in het nummer, iets heel erg hitgevoelig.

Charley: Absoluut. De Spaanse zangeres Edurne heeft ook een eigen versie van het nummer opgenomen. Heb je die al gehoord?

Susanna: Ik werd daar inderdaad attent op gemaakt, dat was even nieuw voor mij. Haar versie is heel anders. Het is veel meer elektronisch. Bij mij hoor je ook heel erg duidelijk mijn stem, bij haar zit er toch echt een soort effect overheen waardoor haar stem een beetje weggemoffeld is.

Charley: Ik vind persoonlijk jouw versie beter!

Susanna: Dankjewel! Ik was ook eerder… *lacht*

Charley: Jouw versie is misschien zelfs ook een beetje meer rockachtig?

Susanna: Ik noem het wel zelf echt pop, maar misschien krijg je dat rockgevoel door de elektrische gitaren die er in zitten. Ik heb het wel vaker gehoord dat het een beetje als P!nk of Katy Perry daar klinkt… Maar zij zijn uiteindelijk ook geen rockzangeressen. Ze hebben wel iets in hun stem of productie waardoor het toch wat rock aandoet. Misschien dat je dat bij mij ook hoort.

Charley: Op YouTube staan ook video’s van jou waar je Norah Jones en Duffy zingt…

Susanna: Ja, klopt!

Charley: Ben je dan toch ook met verschillende stijlen bezig, persoonlijk dan?

Susanna: Dat zijn wel wat oude filmpjes. Iedereen maakt natuurlijk een evolutie door en gaat zich zelf ontdekken. Wat past bij mij? Wat moet ik doen? Dat was ook in de fase dat ik het liefst gewoon zo veel mogelijk wou optreden. Ik heb toen ook echt veel verschillende muziekstijlen uitgeprobeerd. Op andere filmpjes zie je dan weer dat ik ook nummers van Stevie Wonder en Katy Perry zing… Ik heb een beetje alles gedaan. Ik hou dus zeker ook van Norah Jones, maar nu wil ik me gaan focussen op pop. Nu is die fase aangebroken. Ook omdat ik heel erg veel dans in m’n live shows wil verwerken. Maar misschien in de toekomst, wie weet! *lacht*

Charley: Voor je optredens werk je samen met enkele bekende dansers…

Susanna: Dat klopt, ja! Nederland en België maken samen het programma So You Think You Can Dance, jullie kijken daar natuurlijk ook naar. De ene heet Remy, hij was een van de finalisten, en de andere heet Marcello, die is volgens mij tot net de ronde daarvoor gekomen. Het is natuurlijk gewoon fantastisch om met zulke goede dansers te kunnen samenwerken. Ik heb ook altijd zelf gedanst vroeger…

Charley: Mogen ze jou dan ook vragen voor Dancing With The Stars?

Susanna: *lacht* Nou, wie weet! Dat lijkt me wel leuk, ja!

Charley: De video-opnames van de clip waren niet de eerste keer dat je voor de camera gestaan hebt. Ik heb gezien dat je ook in reclamefilmpjes hebt meegespeeld?

Susanna: Dat klopt, ik heb ook acteerwerk gedaan!

Charley: Is dat dan ook iets wat je nog wil combineren of concentreer je je nu liever enkel op je muziek?

Susanna: Zeg nooit nooit. Ik heb heel lang getwijfeld, “Wordt het acteren of wordt het zingen?” Om die keuze te maken ben ik ook naar New York gegaan aan het Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute. Dat was drie maanden intensief zang en acteren. Uiteindelijk koos ik dus toch voor het zingen, maar dat betekent niet dat ik acteren niet leuk vind. Ik heb gewoon voor mezelf bedacht dat als ik nu ergens succesvol in wil gaan worden ik me moet gaan focussen op één ding. Dan komt de rest vanzelf wel. Als iemand dus vraagt “Wil je in een film acteren?” of “Wil je in een commercial meedoen?”, natuurlijk, dan doe ik dat, maar mijn focus ligt nu op het zingen.
